Investing.com-- Google will update its Maps platform to rename the Gulf of Mexico as the "Gulf of America" in the U.S. following an official update from the government, it said in an X post on Monday.

This move aligns with Trump's "America First" policy and fulfills the executive order he made after taking office on Jan. 20 . The renaming has sparked discussions among cartographers and political leaders.

In addition to renaming the Gulf, President Trump has ordered that Alaska's Mount Denali revert to its former name, Mount McKinley.

The U.S. Board on Geographic Names, responsible for standardizing place names, will oversee the renaming process.

Alphabet (NASDAQ: GOOGL ) Inc's (NASDAQ: GOOG ) Google said in an X post that after the official information is updated, "we will update Google Maps in the U.S. quickly to show Mount McKinley and Gulf of America."

The Gulf of Mexico, a major body of water bordered by the United States, Mexico, and Cuba, has long been a focal point for trade, energy production, and environmental conservation. The decision to rename it has sparked mixed reactions, with some applauding the move as a reflection of updated geographic standards, while others question its necessity and potential geopolitical implications.
