Canada stocks higher at close of trade; S&P/TSX Composite up 1.22%

Investing.com – Canada stocks were higher after the close on Wednesday, as gains in the Materials , Consumer Discretionary and IT sectors led shares higher.

At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite gained 1.22%.

The best performers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Ivanhoe Mines Ltd. (TSX: IVN ), which rose 12.77% or 1.64 points to trade at 14.48 at the close. Meanwhile, Bombardier Inc (TSX: BBDb ) added 9.95% or 7.86 points to end at 86.89 and First Quantum Minerals Ltd . (TSX: FM ) was up 9.59% or 1.62 points to 18.51 in late trade.

The worst performers of the session were Baytex Energy Corp (TSX: BTE ), which fell 4.68% or 0.14 points to trade at 2.85 at the close. Stella-Jones Inc. (TSX: SJ ) declined 3.28% or 2.25 points to end at 66.42 and Suncor Energy Inc (TSX: SU ) was down 3.11% or 1.58 points to 49.24.

Rising stocks outnumbered declining ones on the Toronto Stock Exchange by 647 to 261 and 83 ended unchanged.

Shares in Baytex Energy Corp (TSX: BTE ) fell to 3-years lows; losing 4.68% or 0.14 to 2.85.

The S&P/TSX 60 VIX , which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 4.28% to 14.76.

Gold Futures for April delivery was up 0.29% or 8.59 to $2,929.19 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in April fell 2.71% or 1.85 to hit $66.41 a barrel, while the May Brent oil contract fell 2.29% or 1.63 to trade at $69.41 a barrel.

CAD/USD was unchanged 0.40% to 0.70, while CAD/EUR fell 1.15% to 0.65.

The US Dollar Index Futures was down 1.35% at 104.26.
