Investing.com-- Elon Musk said on Tuesday that Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA ) will double its vehicle production in the U.S. as support for President Donald Trump, after he publicly purchased a Tesla vehicle earlier in the day.
“In support of the policies of President @realDonaldTrump and to demonstrate our confidence in the future of the United States, @Tesla commits to doubling vehicle production in the US within 2 years!,” Musk said in a post on X.
Musk did not go into details on whether this would entail increased capacity at Tesla’s existing factories in California and Texas, or whether the EV maker will build new factories in the country.
Tesla has production capacity of about 1.1 million vehicles in the U.S., and produced about 1.8 million vehicles globally in 2024. The company did not disclose just how many of these vehicles were made in the U.S.
Musk’s vow to double production also comes amid speculation over a new model from Tesla, as the EV maker grapples with steadily declining sales, a deteriorating brand image, and increased public outrage over Musk’s ties to the Trump administration.
Plans to increase production could be undermined by further declines in Tesla’s sales.
Trump had earlier on Tuesday claimed to have purchased a new Model S as a show of support for Musk, who he lauded for his work with the government.
Tesla’s shares jumped 4% after Trump’s move, although they are still nursing a nearly 40% slump so far in 2025.
Trump’s recent support for Tesla was in response to apparent boycotts of the EV maker, while protests and acts of vandalism were carried out across several of its facilities in the U.S., Canada, and Europe.
Protestors expressed outrage over Musk’s activities in the Department of Government Efficiency, which oversaw a swathe of federal layoffs and funding cuts, as well as his alleged ties to the alt-right.
