Bond ETFs Added $9B Last Week as Stock Funds Bled Cash

Just over $7.1 billion flowed into U.S.-listed exchange-traded funds last week, with volatility in the stock market causing ETF investors to favor bonds over stocks.

The $9.4 billion that went into U.S. fixed income ETFs was partially offset by the $5.6 billion that came out of U.S. equity ETFs. International equity and fixed income ETFs had net inflows of $1.7 billion and $2 billion, respectively.

Year-to-date inflows for all U.S.-listed ETFs rose to $605.5 billion, while total assets under management stand at $9.57 trillion.

Tech ETFs Struggle

Taking the top spot on the weekly inflows list was the Vanguard 500 Index Fund (VOO) . The ETF’s $3.7 billion of inflows was about a billion dollars ahead of the No. 2 on the list, the iShares MSCI EAFE Value ETF (EFV) .

On the fixed income side, the iShares Core Total USD Bond Market ETF (IUSB) and the iShares 7-10 Year Treasury Bond ETF (IEF) were the biggest flows winners, with inflows of $2.3 billion and $1.6 billion, respectively.

Stocks were hammered last week, while bonds rallied as economic growth worries continued to plague financial markets. Technology stocks, in particular, have been struggling.

The Vanguard Information Technology ETF (VGT) and the tech-heavy Invesco QQQ Trust (QQQ) were No.1 and No.3 on the weekly outflows list, with redemptions of $3.6 billion and $2.8 billion, respectively. The SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust (SPY) , the world’s largest ETF and a favorite among traders, had outflows of $3.4 billion.
